Chapter 2

Roxie Takes Charge

February 27:

Roxie wastes no time re-establishing her nest location. She will use the same nest as the past few years, the only nest she has ever known! After a few nestorations, it should be better than ever!

Here, she has broken a fresh cypress switch out of the tree and is about to deliver it to the nest, where she will work it into the existing framework of the old nest. Most of the sticks that make up the nest are about this size, and cypress is a good choice for long, flexible material. Click to Enlarge.
Roxie Grasps a Stick
Roxie on Guard Here is Roxie, surveying her little home. She is using the same perch she has used in the past, the best vantage point to watch the contents of the nest, which you can see in the bottom left of this photo. From ground level, there are only a few places where you can get a glimpse of the nest. It is very well camouflaged by the leaves and limbs of the live oak tree in which it resides, about 50-60 feet up from the ground.
